The theory that says that the delimitation between the classical continents Europe and Asia runs along the Ural Mountains and River. Most of Russia is located East of this boundary and, according to this theory, in Asia.

I live in Canada and when i was a kid i remember my geographic theacher telling us that Russia or U.R.S.S. in that time, was in Asia. I don't really know the reason but that is what we learned.

Martin.

In geographical terms, the whole of Europe is part of the Eurasian continent. Strictly speaking Europe isn't really a continent in it's own right, just a bit of land sticking out of Asia.
Of course, for cultural reasons we like to think of ourselves as a seperate continent, different from the Asiatic peoples.
By common convention, European Russia lies to the west of the Urals; everything to the east is in Asia. Seems a bit arbitrary, but there you are.

According to the "area theory" we should put for example Denmark to North America section or to Arctic, as majority of this country (Greenland) is located there...

This comparison refers also (with slightly smaller impact) to Russia...

Therefore I agree with Daria... both historically and culturally Russia derives from the region west from Ural mountains, which is defined as Europe... however in fact most of the political area (measured in square km not in number of people living there) is located to the east of Ural...

It takes only 8 hours by car to reach Helsinki from my home! Who esle can boast about it???
I'm an European as millions of other Russians.

Hi..
A part of Russia is in Europe and a part is in Asia.. That is geography, not cultural or racial...
Moscow is European, but is not Vladivostok a bit far from Europe?
Enjoy life
