Default photo change when posting

I'm not sure why this is happening, but after I fix up my pictures in iPhoto (on my mac) and upload them, the colors really fade and almost look like I didn't change anything.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be because I reduce the image quality?

Bill,

I shoot and edit in RAW,than save the frame. I have gotten into the habit of over sharpening and over saturating almost everything. The shots that look great on my Mac do not always look the same posted, I think there will always be surprises because of the small posting size but you will figure it out and overcome.

Two words: Colour profiles.

Let me explain... Most web browsers aren't colour profile aware, but if you use SaveAs in Photoshop then the image will be saved with profile data. Unfortunately that profile data isn't understood by the majority of web browsers, so your image will display incorrectly on the majority of systems, even if they're calibrated.

The solution, in Photoshop at least, is to use SaveForWeb, and uncheck "ICC Profile". That forces a conversion to implied sRGB. Problem solved.

Always remember to check in a web browser before you upload, just to be certain! I'd use Firefox or IE, as they're used by the majority, and aren't profile aware. At least not as of IE7/FF2.
