Hello Ourania!

Is it common in greek orthodox churches to light a candle on entering and extinguish it before leaving? Or is it just a measure of precaution to keep the church intact? This would be contrary to catholic habits - to which I'm not very accustomed, as I am a lutheran protestant...

Have a nice weekend!

Hello Sven,
thank you! Yes, people always light candles when they enter an Orthodox church and, as they do, they thank God, if they are content, or wish for the health of themselves and their family or for the peaceful rest of a dear one whom they lost. In big and organized churches there's someone who takes care of the candles and extinguishes the burnt ones or makes more space, if there are too many or in danger to fall down. In chapels, especially those that are rarely visited and stand in windy sites, the pilgrims put the candles off before they go, so as to keep the chapel neat and avoid any danger of fire.
All the best,
