Cornus mas (Cornaceae family), the Cornelian cherry,

is a vigorous deciduous shrub to 15 feet. The yellow flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves which are dark green, turning purple in the autumn. The bright red fruits produced in late summer are edible. Its native lands are Southern Europe and western Asia.
