Photographer's Note

These big ammonites are not what they seem...
I've taken this picture along the road from Agadir to Imouzzer des Ida ou Tanane, in the Western High Atlas (Morocco), where numerous people are waiting for tourists, proposing fossils, minerals, and handicrafts as souvenirs. These nice pieces are funny because they are all but fossils ! They have been sculpted by the same man who sells them in pieces of sandstone rock which have never contained such ammonites !
These people are specialists in the realization of such pieces which have no interests for collectors, but they are really interesting as handicraft pieces and the sculpture job is nice !
They usually sell these to novice tourists but most often to restaurants and hotel owners who use them for decoration...
Note that the specimen lying in the right-down corner of the picture is a real fossil (Moroccan Cretaceous gisements are nevertheless between the richest in the world !)...
