The Barrier of Spears, a photo from KwaZulu-Natal, East

Photographer's Note

This is the third of the Drakensberg Mountains taken from the top of the Amphitheatre. Although the image was taken close to the middle of winter there is very little snow at anyone stage.. The nights are thus cold always reaching below freezing, and when morning comes and the sun shines it turns into wonderful warm days for walking.

In a previous posting I mentioned that the transalation of the Afrikaans- Drakensberg is "The Dragon Mountains. In Zulu the mountains are called uKhahlamba-- the transalation being - " The Barrier of Spears".. I prefer the Zulu transalation.

The range is over 200 miles long reaching over 3300 meters (or 11000 feet) above sea level

My congratulations on your 400th picture. A nice panoramic view with nice color contrast. The dark and the green in the foreground with clouds hovering over the mountain peaks on the top right. There is a nice feeling of depth.

This photo of 2000 still preserves a high quality, in spite of the passed years.
The POV is fantastic, and the panoramic sight that you offer us is absolutely breathtaking, because of its great depth and the immensity of the landscape.

A superb high pov with good shadow detail at left. Good sharpness with nice aerial perspective and the cloud at right adds to the tonal range. Good textural details in the grassy knoll at right. Tfs!

Hi Richard,
spectacular view. Great composition. I like the dark shade of the mountain range in the left. It cuts the frame diagonally. You have also some pleasant foreground with vegetation and a breath taking panorama far in the distance.
