Photographer's Note

Looking down into the Didima Valley, the cliff edge is 900m high, no wonder I'm taking the pic a safe distance away... Vulture's Retreat is situated in the Monk's Cowl area of the Kwazulu Natal Drakensberg. The name is apt indeed as a breeding colony of Cape griffons and bearded vultures nest nearby on the steep basalt cliffs. The altitude is aprox. 3000m above sea level. A hazy fog has enveloped the distant peaks of the Cathedral range, adding to the atmosphere. During our 4-day hike we've experienced a fierce hale storm and cold/wet conditions, since it is the rainy season, but when the cloud lifts it is also the greenest splendour that greets the lone hiker.
This image was scanned from a print, therefore the quality is somewhat grainy, pls excuse.
