The Ksar of Aït Ben-Haddou, in Ouarzazate province, is an important historical and social site.

It is located on the south of the High Atlas, in the Ounila valley, on the commercial road between the ancient Sudan and Marrakech, through the Dra valley and the Tizi n Telouet col.
The first implantation date from the Almoravids era (11th century).

The ksar, a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls, is a traditional pre-Saharan habitat. The houses crowd together within the defensive walls, which are reinforced by corner towers. Aït Ben-Haddou is a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco.

Since 1987 Aït Ben-Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its magnificent red walled buildings and impressive architecture has made Ait Ben-Haddou the site of many films including, most recently, the films Gladiator in 2000 and Alexander in 2004.
