Photographer's Note

I am getting near the end of my journey through Afghanistan on my way back to Europe in the spring of 1973. The day after I took this photo in the market area of Herat I crossed the border into Iran.

This was from one of the rare occasions when I managed to drag myself out of bed early to catch the morning sun. Other members of TE (yes Malgo, I'm thinking of you, among others) love to rise before dawn, but I am usually not up to it.

There is not much more I can say about this particular photo. I can add that Herat, the major city of western Afghanistan, is regarded as the cultural centre of the country and has a proud history as a centre for poetry and miniature paintings.

I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. Here is a larger version.
