Photographer's Note

I was inspired by Paul's photos so there is no wonder I visited the same places. Also for me the trip to Tatev was a highlight of Armenia. It is quite far excursion from Yerevan - about 250 km one way. In high season one can join the organized tour, but in April there were almost no tourists, so the best and maybe only way to go there was to go by car with a driver. And it had this advantage that we could stop for photos in any place we like, for so much time as we needed and we also visited other interesting places - Noravank and Zorats Karer. Besides the monastery itself, the big attraction is to go by Wings of Tatev. It was a great fun to "fly" over 300 m above the ground in a small car. We were the only passengers so we could make photos from all the sides. The views were really breathtaking (see Workshops)

Wings of Tatev is a 5.7 km cableway between Halidzor and the Tatev monastery. It is the longest reversible aerial tramway built in one section only. Construction was finished on 16 October 2010.

Gathered in the country's southern mountains near the border with Iran, guests including president Serzh Sarkisian and the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Karekin II, took part as the cable car link launched its first official voyage over the Vorotan River Gorge. The link allows year-round access to Armenia's 9th-century Tatev monastery complex, one of the country's most important religious centres and a major tourist attraction.

The cable car travels at a speed of 37 kilometers per hour and a one-way journey takes 10 minutes. At its highest point over the gorge, the car travels 320 m above ground level.

It has two cabins, each capable of carrying up to 25 passengers. On 23 October 2010 it was officially recorded in the Guinness World Records book.
