Photographer's Note

A statue of a demon in front of the daily market in Ubud, central Bali. Believing that bad spirits and demons which are part of our world have to be kept satisfied and soothed, Balinese people offer them little sacrifices - mainly beautifully decorated little "baskets" made from palm tree leaves, with flowers, rice and some fruits. This demon, in front of the market, would be covered with offerings over the course of the day up to his arms. In the evening, everything would be cleaned up, so that the rituals could begin anew in the morning.
