Photographer's Note

When the boat left the harbor that morning the night was running to its end. I felt comforted by the darkness surrounding me as you could already feel the excitement of a new day. The boat floated along in slow pace zigzagging across the Ayeyarwady River, trying to avoid the low water.

Once the boat got into its rhythm, the sun erupted from the earth in all its power and splendor just beside a pagoda, colouring the sky in fire red. The silhouettes along the riverbanks revealed their shapes and faces as the sun rose higher.

The cheerful waving and greetings of the Ayeyarwady River people were warming up the day even more than the burning sun. Perhaps that is why my heart bled even more when I saw this little boy.

A feeling of genuine sadness creeps into me as I think of this little brave soul standing there. His eyes filled with despair, his lips curled downwards, his school uniform worn off…
Like the little dot of grass on that bare land, he was just standing there; all alone.
