Photographer's Note

In 1993 one could only obtain a 14 day visa, so I was in a hurry. Coming from Inle Lake by pick-up I took the train south and got off at Pegu and took a bus to Kyaikto. I didn't get far though, at a bridge I was escorted off by soldiers as the area was off-limits. I convinced the soldiers that Tourist Birma wouldn't mind. Finally I was allowed through. At the foot of the mountain the final bus had already left so I walked as long as I could up till darkness. I slept on a vendor stall with the locals till the soldiers came and ordered me off the mountain. My reply "I will only leave when I've seen the pagoda". The soldiers were determined but not as determined as I was. In the morning I walked up to the pagoda, took some pictures, checked if the hair of Buddha was still there and left.
