Photographer's Note

I'll finish my Russian series with this postcard style shot of Moscow State University. A few on the site, but none quite the same as this.

I've discussed the idea of beautiful/ugly buildings before in this posting. This is pobably the most extreme example. Built largley with slave labour by prisoners of war, not repatreated after WWII hostilities, it's about as kitch as you can get, the largest and most elaborate of Stalin's 'seven sisters'. But it's so extreme I find I just can't gelp admiring it, in spite of it's motivation and associated history (much the way I feel about Europe's great cathederals). It's also one of Europe's great univiersities with an internationally recognised reputation. Really a building full of contradictions.
