Photographer's Note

south korea has world cup fever!!!

they've had the fever since 2002 when they managed to come 4th overall, the best result ever for an asian team.

this year the pandamonium is intense. koreans are celebrating and cheering, hoping their country can emulate the results of the last world cup.

korea's game against france was at 4am local time. FOUR IN THE MORNING!!!!!! yet hundreds of thousands of people swarmed to the city to cheer their team.

i went to city hall too ... i wanted to capture the crowds and the craziness and the love for football. city hall was conjested with people and police trying to control the crowds.

vagabond travels and i both went into the seoul plaza hotel. they had limited access to the hotel because it had the best view of the city hall square. we talked our way in, talked our way into a couple of press passes, and talked our way onto the third floor balcony to shoot the action.

there were only photographers up there, all with press passes, and we were among them ... looking over a crowd that looked to be around 200,000 people or more. we both took lots of shots.

this shot is the city hall square (see the clock face in the top left corner). the shot is of the crowd, but this is only half of the crowd that was there. i didn't want to get it all in the shot because it wouldn't look as good photographically.

the massive stage, lights, five screens, singers, dancers and cheering kept the crowd entertained for hours leading up to the game.

this photo was taken just as the korea vs france game was beginning. the entire crowd stood up for the national anthem and cheered wildly as their compatriots took the field for kick off.

if you're a football fan, you've never seen anything as amazing and wonderful as a korean crowd in full voice.

this pales to the million strong crowd during the 2002 world cup ... but considering it was 4am, the half million people around the centre of seoul is very impressive.

korea is becoming a reputable football country and they're having a good world cup. with a win against togo and a draw against france, they're in a good position to progress to the next round.

dae han min gook ... the nation of korea!! fighting!!

note: i took two shots that i liked. i've posted II as the main shot, because it's better than III but i've posted III as a workshop.
