Photographer's Note

One of the great crafts if Khiva is wood carving. This master craftsman was carving a massive door and surrounds using only traditional carving tools. The tools looked like very large versions of the tools that my wife, a print maker, uses for her lino cuts.
When not doing large commissions he carves smaller items such as the ones in the background. We bought an amazing piece made from one piece of wood with 8 interlocked pieces that can be folded in several positions (Margaret made a video of him to help when we got home). The piece is basically a beautifully carved book (or traditionally a Quran) stand.
