Granada - Iglesia San Francisco

The San Francisco Church has been built in 1585 but was later burned down by pirates.

The location of Granada on Lake Nicaragua meant that the city was very vulnerable to attacks by pirates from the Caribbean Sea.
They were able to reach the other side of Lake Nicaragua by boat from the Caribbean Sea along the well navigable Rio San Juan.
This is the same road as the later migrants to California took. See my note on a previous photo about the lake.

The San Francisco Church was rebuilt in 1868 and restored in 1989.
There’s also the important Convento San Francisco that houses a very interesting museum with a lot of art from the Nicaragua's pre-Columbian people.
