Managua - The metal forest of the Árboles de la Vida

See the note at my previous picture.

The Nicaraguan people have lost faith in their government and in a president who clings to power. The former revolutionary has become a dictator himself.

The Árboles de la Vida, metal sculptures that serve as a lighting post at night, were meant to beautify the cityscape. You find them along the main avenues and a plurality of them decorates the Malecon on the shore of Lake Xolotlán.

For the protesters, however, they were a symbol of mismanagement of president Ortega, a symbol of a revolutionary who lost touch with the people.
In recent weeks, a number of these lighting structures have been pulled down.
