Photographer's Note

This is a photo looking down from the summit of the Ahorn Spitze, 2979m, Zillertal Alps, Austria. The ridge below is the route to the summit and is called the Popberg Schneide. It's not a bad climb, beginning at the top of the Cable Car from Mayrhofen at around 1800m. From there you head to the Edel Hütte (just visible in the bottom left) for some breakfast - and from there it's a 2 hour climb to the summit.

The view from the top is stunning - the Ahorn is the end peak on a long ridge and so you get excellent views back along the ridge to the south and even better views into the Zillertal Valley and Mayrhofen.

It was a very hot day on this day - 37 degrees in Mayrhofen. The amount of folks that tried to climb this peak without extra water, food or proper clothing was astounding - most of them failed and turned back at the ridge below. Of the 100 or so people that I saw only 5 or 6 actually summited.
