Maldegem

The Old Town Hall is a building in the East-Flemish town of Maldegem, located at Marktstraat 40.

History.

The building is not a town hall, but an inn. It was built in 1653 next to the Old Ship House, on the site of a housed homestead. The craft council used a large room in the building as a council room. This room was connected to the ship's house through a door.
After the craft was abolished in 1796, the building remained in the possession of the three municipalities (Maldegem, Adegem and Sint-Laureins) that were formed from the craft. In 1833 it was sold to the Van Mullem brewery family. In 1904 there was disagreement between the municipal administration and the then owner, who then bricked up the door to the boathouse. Until 2002 the building continued to serve as an inn and café, called Herberg Oud Stadhuis.
In the past, this was also a relaxation, of which the wide entrance gate, which was arched by a basket bow, still bears witness. The rear annexes used to house horse stables.

I hope you like it
