Photographer's Note

A beautiful beach near Hotel Alan in Starigrad (about 40 kilometres from Zadar) offers this rather scenic bit of history to look at. It's a tower called Večka kula (Vechka Tower). It was named after a village that once stood there and the Venetians, who were the masters of Dalmatia, built it in the 16th century as part of a network of forts that defended their domain against the onslaught of the Ottoman Empire. Not far from here is the entrance into one of the more spectacular national parks in Croatia - Paklenica Canyon.
The tower itself is also part of a folk story that says that it was the seat of King Psoglav (Doghead). He had a dog's head, obviously, but nobody knew it (!) except the guy who shaved him. Once he shaved the king he had to die, so as not to reveal the big secret, and the next fellow would get the job. Long story short, the truth came out and the king decided to grow a beard.
