Photographer's Note

We enjoyed the sunset at Fort St. John. Set on a promontory at the entrance of the Old Port, Fort St. John is ideally located to "protect" the city. Or rather, to monitor her. The fort was indeed built during the reign of Louis XIV to enforce obedience to the people after a period of upheaval. His cannons were also toward the city, not to the sea. The fort is backed by a wide square tower, the tower of King René, and includes within it the round tower of the lantern.

The lantern tower was built in 1644 at the request of Marseilles shipowners. Serving as lookout, the tower had to be seen by commercial vessels 20 km from the harbor.
