Sainte-Marie-Majeure cathedral, Marseille

The Sainte-Marie-Majeure of Marseille cathedral of the 19th century, of romano-Byzantine style, built from 1852 till 1893, named also The cathedral of la Major, set up as minor basilica of Sainte-Marie-Majeure by the pope Léon 13, 1810-1903, in 1896, be dedicated in 1897. Classified as "Historic Monument" since 1906.

It is built between the Vieux-Port of Marseille and the grand port maritime de Marseille, in which we can see, behind the cathedral, the ferry Napoléon Bonaparte.

The cathedral brought up on a plan in the shape of latin cross, of a longeur of 146 meters, is surmounted by a dome 18 meters, 70 meters in height, whereas its bell towers have 60 meters in height. The used materials are various and of various colors, as the marble and the porphyre.

It is the prince-president Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, 1808-1873, on September 26th, 1852, who laid the foundations of a construction wished by the bishop Eugène de Mazenod, 1782-1861, and realized by the architects Léon Vaudoyer, 1803-1872, Jacques Henri Esperandieu, 1829-1874, also architect of Notre-Dame de la Garde, and Henri Antoine Révoil, 1822-1900.

The cathedral has involved the partial destruction of the previous cathedral of Marseille, named the church of La vieille Major, romane, 11th 12th centuries, which is built on the site of a previous early Christian church of the 5th century, and a baptistery.

MARSEILLE is a French commune, located in the department of the Bouches-du-Rhône of the area Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, populated of 852395 Marseillais in 2007, divided out of 239 km², that is to say 3335 hab./km².

Marseille the oldest town of France, is rich of a 2600 years past of history.
With 1,601,095 inhabitants in 2006, Marseille is the third urban surface behind Paris and Lyon.

Marseille, was founded towards 600 before J.-C. by Greek sailors, came from Phocée to Asia Mineure, under the name of Massalia.

Marseille is the first French port and the fourth European port.
