Photographer's Note

The old Elbe Tunnel is an extraordninary piece of civil engineering. The Tunnel is accessed by a lift ! It was built 1907 - 1911 for the port and shipyard workers in a revolutionary way by laying two pipes 448 metres long at a depth of 23 metres. The access featured two shafts with elevator cages because there was no space for other ramps. Still this tunnel is in use and the trip by car is atm EUR 1.30, on foot or by bicycle nothing. For tourists the beautiful Steinwerder outlook platform at the southern side of the tunnel is an often chosen spot. Please find part II here.
