Photographer's Note

Meteora, a place of incredible beauty, formed by the movement of the earth millions of years ago. Monks made use of this environment to move their monasteries up away from the invading Turks and still live there today. There are several working monasteries in the area and you can visit most of them. Getting there can be a challenge with a steep climb up stone steps. There are dress codes to be observed and respectful behaviour required. But it is so worth it. The monasteries in these surroundings fill you with a sense of spiritual beauty. They are peaceful, fascinating and wonderful to visit.
We nearly didn't go here, and it took us 2 days and 4 buses from Athens, but never let that put you off if you have an opportunity. We stayed in the nearby town of Kastraki which gives you walking distance to at least 4 monasteries.
