Reynishöfn near Garðar:
At the bottom of the cliff, you can see columnar basalt.
Columnar basalt created by cooling of lava flow. This causes a contraction of the lava and creates fractures (perpendicular to the surface of the lava flow) with hexagonal forms. The slower it cools, the more regular the column are. These structures are stronger than other rocks especially when the cooling was slow and appear thanks to the errosion of the sea.
