Photographer's Note

The Turkish word for castle is 'kale' and this is the Skopke Kale. The Ottoman Turks ruled the Balkans for 500 years including Macedonia FYR and many of the words and customs stuck. There is still a sizable Turkish Macedonian population within Skopje and it's like walking through Turkey in some parts of the north bank of the Vardar River. 'Kale' is pronounced as 'car-lay', not as kay'l, like the relative of cabbage!
