Zeeland is a good example of how Holland is made.
The Islands of Zeeland are protected against the sea only at the western side, where dunes form the natural protection against the floods. The rest of the island could 'wander' and so the Islands did until 1000 BC when the inhabitants started to build villages and acres that they wanted to protect.
The start builiding dykes to keep the water out and mills to pump the water to the sea.
After the floods of 1953 new dykes are built to create a stronger shield. Here you can see the old dyke near Serooskerke and on the right an area between the old dyke and the new one (here not visible).
