Afternoon by the canal - a silent place in the middle if the city
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, lies on the banks of two bodies of water, the IJ bay and the Amstel river. Founded in the late 12th century as a small fishing village on the banks of the Amstel, it is now the largest city in the country and its financial and cultural centre. As of 2005, the population of the city proper is 742,951[1]; the population of the greater Amsterdam area is approximately one and a half million.
Amsterdam has one of the largest historic city centres in Europe, dating largely from the 17th century, the Golden Age of the Netherlands, of which it was the focal point. At this time, a series of concentric, semi-circular canals were built around the older city centre, which still defines its layout and appearance today. Many fine houses and mansions are situated along the canals. Some of the narrow brick houses are gradually sinking because they are built on wooden piles to cope with the marshy subsoil.
The city is noted for many outstanding museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Rembrandt House Museum and the Anne Frank House. Notable are also its red-light district, de Wallen, and its numerous "coffee shops" selling cannabis.

Hi Jack,
quite busy outside at the moment but pleased to see your post as I am coming for a short visit throught the gallery.
So, 18.32 is quite a dark hour in Amsterdam, and you give a natural picture, well framed with this man opening to the canal view.
A Nice place

Bonjour mon ami Jack,

Moody shot for the very cold March we've had in western Europe. I like the perspective and repetition of cars etc.

Hola Jack.
Very well composed picture with good reflection on the canal. The perspective is quite good with also a great depth effect. Love the darkness of a cold evening at Amsterdam. Well done.

i like the workshop because it agrees with what i was thinking about this shot. although it's a nice shot of the canals, i think it's too dark. it must have been a dark afternoon because your aperture is wide open and your shutter speed is slow ... i'm also really distracted by the bicycle in the bottom left corner.
i love amsterdam and i'm hoping you have more shots that show what amsterdam is about.
