Photographer's Note

In the eastern Dutch region of Twente life is quite a bit slower then in the western part of the Netherlands. For many Dutch originally coming from the western part of the Netherlands the border is around 50 km east of Amsterdam, everything else is foreign land. The land looks different after Amersfoort coming from the west ... no more polders, no clay but real old land on sand. Small scale landscapes instead of the open (boring) polders.
Coming from the east myself I couldn't care less that the originally western Dutchies think this way. It leaves more to enjoy for those who do know and estimate the value and quality of the east.

This is one of the many small farms you can find in the Twente region, nicely situated between the old naturally grown trees.
If you happen to visit the Netherlands someday, take a chance and go east or south for that matter, but leave the Randstad area in the west and find yourself in a different country. Still the Netherlands though it is.

This photo was taken near Denekamp, a small town about 25km north of Enschede and Hengelo, not too far from the German border (and that truly is foreign land).
