Photographer's Note

During my visit to Poland I had hiked the trail from Wadowice at elevation 250m/820ft (birthplace of Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II) to Leskowiec mountain at elevation 922m/3015ft. John Paul II was nature admirer and liked climbing the peaks. As a young boy he visited these mountains very often. As a result, there are many wayside shrines and crosses on the trail.

On the trail we can meet a lot of folk shrines that are integral part of the landscape of the Polish countryside. Polish shrines are beautiful, full of simplicity, reflection, mystery and unique beauty. Built by local folk artists is a specific beauty carved in wood, stone or brick. In the niche the most common forms of the Virgin Mary and Child or Christ the Man of Sorrows.
