Photographer's Note

The Santa Cruz Monastery and Church captured at sunset are together a National Monument. Because the first two kings of Portugal are buried in the church they deserved the status of National Pantheon. Founded in 1131 outside the protecting walls of Coimbra, it was the most important monastic house during the early days of the monarchy.
Nothing remains of the early Romanesque monastery but in the first half of the 16th century, it was renovated by King Manuel's order.
As for the connected Cafe Santa Cruz, it was originally built as an auxiliary chapel to the Church.
