Photographer's Note

Viseu de Sus is a Romanian town located in the north of Maramures region. For me - as a railway enthusiast – the biggest place of interest in Viseu is a narrow-gauge railway line leading to the heart of Maramures Mountains along the valley of Wazer river.

As the mountain woods were extensively exploited, the line was built to make the wood transport easier. In the next years the main line was enriched with some branch-lines going up the beautiful mountain valleys. Viseu people call the train: mocanita and the max. tracking speed is 30 km/h (which is written on the red loco banner).

After a Swiss company opened tourist runs several years ago, people like us can take the fantastic Maramures rocky tour. The train departs early in the morning from Viseu station, to be back in the town at the evening.

As the line goes only several kilometers from Romanian/Ukrainian border, a lot of border guards watch the area. They are „Politia de frontiera”, wear blue uniforms and keep check-points at some mocanita stations. You can see them at the background between wood-cars.

Advice: To avoid disappointments, check all trip details one day before.
