Photographer's Note

This is the Arch of Santa Maria, it was built in the 14th century as the main gate of the walled in city of Burgos, the capital of Castilla-Leon, the largest autonomous community in Spain, and located along the northern route of the Camino de Santiago. The ornaments were made in the 16th century and include sculptures of the first Castilian judges, El Cid, King Carlos I, and Spain's patron saint, James. I put a closeup of these sculptures into the Workshop. El Cid was a 11th century knight, born near Burgos, and remembered as a major contributor of the unification of Spain. Probably best known outside Spain as a result of the very successful 1961 film with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. The arch is now a tourist attraction and hosts temporary exhibitions.
