Photographer's Note
Large post - click on the image to see the large panoramic view.
I made these pictures in the Forest of Finges (the one I talked about in earlier posts). There was hole of water and ice everywhere on the ground, then, I remarked that there was beautiful differents natural structures. I decide today to share it with your. I hope you will appreciate. Maybe some TE's members had never had the chance to see these in real...
Crystals of ice :
Water can be in three different states: liquid, solid or gas. One can obtain crystals in two different ways: while passing from the liquid state in a solid state, one obtains ice then, or while passing from the gas state (as in the clouds) in a solid state, one obtains this time snow; In both cases, one needs germs of cristalisation, like dust, around whose the water molecules will be able to incorporate itself; They thus will arrange the ones around the others in order to form the most stable possible structure. In the most current structure, each molecule is related to four neighbors by hydrogen bonds. There is thus more space between the molecules than in the liquid state, this is why the ice is less dense than water and the icebergs float. The water molecules are ordered in the crystal according to a hexagonal reason, this is why the flakes have a hexagonal general form. But the possibilities are infinite. Ukichiro Nakaya (1954) however succeeded in classifying the crystals in seven categories; plates, stars, columns, needles, dendrites, columns with cap and crystals irregular. The size and the shape of the crystal depend on the conditions of moisture, the temperature and the time during which it will remain in the cloud. For example the plates are formed at a temperature lower than stars. At the beginning of the formation of the crystal the form is simple, it evolves/moves according to the place where water are fixed on the crystal. As they rather tend to be fixed on the angles, one observes the "lace" shapes, noncompact.

Wonderful composition you made Louy and you right about water and ice. without this fact there properly wouldn’t be life on earth. Great idea to use Large Post this way - thanks for the scientific note.

Are you sure you are a graphic designer and not a scientist of physics? these photos are very well captured and you really chosed an interesting subject. I like the art in your framing of each pic and the whole composition. Very Very well seen and done, Isabelle. Have an excellent 2004.

A novel "panorama" Isabelle and one of the more educational notes I've seen on TrekEarth! The "Micro 105mm F/2.8D" is a macro lens yes? A technically difficult subject to correctly expose for ice - especially when doing macros without flash or a timed exposure on a tripod. So well done.

Very fine shots Louy, with interesting details and a very informative note.
Not least what an excellent idea for doing a presentation of a picture serie. Bravo!

What an amazing wallpaper you have created here Isabelle – and the rich informative note brings it all together looking at the large version. The framing is very good too.
I never thought about ice and snow in that way. I simply took ice for ice and snow for snow and that’s it. - Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful collage and your knowledge about the ice crystals.

WOW ! Smart idea to post such an season's theme and teach us so many things. That was some pieces of courses forgotten since a long time.
The shot together with your note are really informative. That could be a scientific illustration for a really informative article. Really good idea, and fantastic illustration !

Isabelle, you're a veritable polymath! Another lovely idea. Must look into getting a macro lens!

What a brilliant idea to take these shots of various ice formations, and so well done for a difficult subject. The presentation in a panorama is also quite nice with a non symetric frame that works well.

I can only agree with the previous critiques. Great idea, fascinating note, and the large view of this is just stunning in terms of sharpness and clarity. A very creative way to use the panoramic format. I've learned a lot from this, thanks Isabelle!

Wow! Scientific and artistic! It's hard to combine the two, but when done well, it is very beautiful ... and everyone wins - science becomes more understandable especially to the science-phobics and art becomes appreciated more. Yours is a wonderful example.
