Photographer's Note

On the island of Grand Turk, we are very proud to evoke this memory of the beginnings of the space conquest. In 1962, it was off Grand Turk that astronaut John Glenn carried out his splashdown. On board Mercury, he had just made three revolutions around the earth, becoming the first American to have made a flight in orbit. The original capsule is therefore presented prominently at a crossroads.
So, the Americans with this first had caught up with the Russians in the space race ... Russians who, with Youri Gagarin, had outstripped them in space ten months earlier.
