“ Upon signing a credit agreement with English Government for 2.5 Million Sterling on November 10, 1936 the contract was awarded to Messrs. H.A. Brassert and foundation ceremony was held on April 3, 1937 in the presence of the Prime Minister, İsmet İNÖNÜ at location Karabük village of Zonguldak city on the wide rice fields. Thus, heavy industry in Turkey has been triggered with the conversion of rice fields to steel plants.
Technological erection works of the first integrated iron and steel works commenced on March 1, 1938 and with intensive and enormous efforts of Turkish engineers, technicians and workers together with English supervisors. Power Plant was the fisrt plant put into operation on June 6, 1939 and other plants became operative successionally within 2 years.
The Iron and Steel Works at Karabük has been the backbone of the Turkish heavy industry for years. The technology of the Iron and Steel Works at Karabük has not been made the renewal for a long period and Karabük Iron and Steel Works faced lost.
Kardemir was privatized on March The 30'th, 1995.
The existing capital of Kardemir is 550.000.000 YTL and 100% of its capital effects transactions on ISE (Istanbul Stock Exchange)
Hence Turkish Goverment deceided either to privatize or close Karabük Iron and Steel work in connection with the economic measures programme issued on 15'th of April 1994.”
