Photographer's Note
National Geographic Photographer Steve Mc Curry was in Istanbul this week. We met at his exhibition, near Topkapi Palace, and I had the time to talk to him for a while a couple of times. The exhibition of 50 color pictures, mostly taken in Asian countries was great. The famous Afghan girl was probably the masterpiece, and I caught Steve on a moment when he stopped in front of the portrait.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, now that's something, to have an image of the master infront of his masterpiece.
Did you ever see the image of the same afghan woman holding this portrait taken 17 years later? Your image complements the original portrait and the portrait of the woman holding her own portrait, very nicely.
Congrats on this catch.

izzet,
Very nice image. Of course a lot of its power comes from McCurry's own photograph, but it also comes from putting the very ordinary looking photographer directly in front of his most striking image. You have created, in a way, a portrait of photograph, by including it and its creator at the same time.
You also happened to get him in a nice pose, looking off into the middle distance, as though looking forward to his next trip and his next picture.
Also, compositionally, you got a nice 3/4 profile of the photographer, and put him squarely in front of his own image without blocking any essential part of the girl's face, which is very nice.
This would make a nice author photo for McCurry.
The only slight flaw is the reflection, or whatever that is, in the bottom right hand corner, but it's minor enough compared to the image's virtues that you should feel proud of this picture and not let it bother you. If you can find a way to fix it, of course, do so, but otherwise, forget it.
I've said before that it is very hard to create a good photograph when the subject is someone else's art work... you must find a way to make it your own. Here you've done that by turning it into a double portrait of the photographer and his subject, and it works really well.
Nicely done,
Lee

This is definitely very inspiring. Unique moment and I can't help remembering instantly some of the beautiful images he's made during his life and particularly the ones published in South Southeast.

Hi Izzet
Excellent portrait of one of the greatest portraitists in the world. He looks like he is contemplating the future of this world while his famous portrait sits behind still more powerful and in the news than ever. Wished you would tell us more about your impressions of this great master since you had the privilege to meet him in person. From your picture he gives the impression of a simple and modest person yet very confident.
Thank you for sharing this moment.

Beautiful photo, Izzet. The master in front of one of his signature pieces makes an excellent subject and an iconic posting for a site such as TE. I also like the different directions of glances we can see in the Afghan girl and Mr McCurry. What a great opportunity for you to meet and talk to him.

Good idea to capture him in front of his famous shot! And a good luck to meet him, also. It is a speciale portrait indeed! Nice, very nice.
Do you know Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin? He went many times in my village photography school, and I had aso a workshop with him, but I never thought to capture him this way!

What a great capture! To catch Steve McCurry in front of his own masterpiece is a wonderful opportunity and you framed it nicely. The lighting on McCurry is good. It makes it look as though a light has gone off in his head about the next great shot he is going to take.

Hi Izzet,
Steve McCurry is one of my favourite photographers and the (ultra)famous portrait is simply stunning.
What I like a lot in your image is how you caught his pose and sight, it seems he was going back with his memory to the moment he took that shot... and you merged all in a really beautiful image... a tribute to him.
