Photographer's Note

We travelled to Edirne at the advise of our friend Deniz. Edirne, formerly Adrianople, is a city in Turkey close to its borders with Greece and Bulgaria. Edirne was the Ottoman Empire’s third capital city (from 1365 to 1453), before Constantinople (Istanbul) became the empire's fourth and final capital.

It was a dull and dreary day when we reached Edirne, and in this town, it’s impossible to miss the Selimiye Mosque, Edirne’s grandest and most central mosque, designed by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, between 1568 and 1574. The mosque, dominating the skyline of the city, was built on a slightly higher hill than its surroundings. It was commissioned by Sultan Selim II, son of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. Four vertically fluted symmetrical minarets (with a diameter of only 3.8m) amplifying the upward thrust, shoot towards the sky like rockets from each corner of the mosque. Surrounded by these four minarets (which are the 2nd highest in the world), the beauty of the mosque results from the conformity of geometric shapes engulfed in each other was the culmination of Mimar Sinan’s lifelong search for a unified interior space. Selimiye Camii (mosque) was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.

The mosque was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2011.

Mimar Sinan is considered to be the greatest Ottoman architect of the Ottoman Empire's Architectural heritage. He was the chief Ottoman architect (Turkish: mimar) and civil engineer for sultans Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II, and Murad III. He shaped the Ottoman Empire architecture in 16th century in so many directions that he was named ‘Great Sinan’, ‘Big Sinan’ by the public while he was still living.

I tried this composition where Mimar Sinan poses on the right in front of his famous creation! :-)
