"James Hill, United Kingdom, The New York Times.
Schools in the town of Beslan, in the Russian province of North Ossetia, were shut down for two weeks following the violent ending of a three-day siege, in which dissidents demanding independence for Chechnya held over 1,200 pupils, parents and teachers of School Number One hostage. More than 330 people lost their lives and a similar number were injured."
