Photographer's Note

The Shops at Columbus Circle, part of the Time Warner Center, is an upscale shopping mall that opened in 2003. It’s not a place where I normally buy anything, but it is a good place to get this unique view of Columbus Circle. :-)

Columbus Circle, named after Christopher Columbus, is a traffic circle located at the intersection of Eighth Avenue, Broadway, Central Park South and Central Park West. It’s next to Merchant’s Gate, one of the many entrances to Central Park.

At the center of the circle is the 76-foot (23 m) Columbus Column monument, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo. It consists of a 14-foot (4.3 m) marble statue of Columbus, atop a granite column, on a granite pedestal. The column is decorated with bronze reliefs representing Columbus' ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. It was unveiled in October 1892, well before Columbus Circle was filled with skyscrapers and shops.

This is a view looking east from the second floor of the shopping mall. In the WS are two more views.
