Photographer's Note

Don't adjust your screen, this photo is not upside down.

Like any self-respecting city, the small city of Asheville has a vibrant experimental and edgy arts scene in addition to its more mainstream attractions. Each winter, the Asheville Fringe Arts Festival (AFAF) provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work, collaborate across genres, and bring innovative performances to "culturally adventurous" audiences. The artistic mix includes experimental works in cross-genre improvisation, Butoh dance, puppetry, sketch theatre, modern dance, and performance art. Since its inception, AFAF has presented hundreds of performances involving an incredible number of artists of all kinds.

Here, in a performance at Lift Art Gallery, a young woman hangs upside down and gazes at a chandelier. To be honest, I have no idea what the performance was about, but it was totally entertaining to photograph :)

I like the play of light in the crystals and how she looks like something from a crime scene. And I like the opportunity to draw attention to a photograph by presenting an unexpected perspective.

As they often say in this town, "That's so Asheville!" :)
