Photographer's Note

My sister Julie and I took the day off of work and decided to go on a "short" hike, that was the plan anyway. The destination Looking Glass Lake in the Mount Adams Wilderness area. The high point of the hike is 6000 feet, the lake sits at 5,580 feet elevation. The trailhead is at 4400 feet elevation. A "short" 6 mile hike, each way, which turned out to be a 6 mile "CLIMB" followed by a 6 mile "DECENT", so much for a "short" hike!! Ten hours of hiking isn't considered a "short" hike I don't believe.

It is a truly beautiful place, the trail sign said "Most Difficult" but Julie and I decided to go for it anyway. It didn't seem very steep going up, except for the scramble up that last ridge to connect with the around the mountain trail. The several stream crossing over rushing water, clinging precariously to tiny logs only frightened me half out of my wits.

By the time we finally found the lake I was so tired I didn't know how I was going to get back to the car, not a good feeling when you know you have to go back the 6 miles you just did! The view was worth it however, the isolation wonderful, no one else to share this gorgeous view with except my sister.

We ate our lunch and headed back, 2pm now, how are we ever going to make it back? I hurt so bad I took a prescription pain pill, left over from my resent surgery. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea, on the first stream crossing I, of course, FALL IN and get wet up past my knees, camera still dry however!!

We made it back to the car 5 hours later, so tired I can barely drive the 1 1/2 hours home. I've come to the conclusion we're both either insane, or just stupid! We do LOVE the mountain scenery though, and probably will do it again, but not SOON!! Having to get up and go to work today was tough.
