Hawthorne Bridge
After our trip along the east side of Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens we arrived late in the afternoon in Portland. The next day we should have a long trip along the pacific coast to Ashland, so we had just the evening to explore Portland. Afterwards we did regret that we didn’t plan to stay one day longer, for Portland appears to be an attractive, fast developing city with a lot of interesting buildings and bridges.
One of these bridges is the Hawthorne Bridge, a vertical lift bridge.
The main picture shows one of the two counterweights (450 tons)
Workshop one shows the bridge from the south side.
Workshop two shows the bridge from the north side with the Marquam Bridge and the Tilikum Crossing in the background.

Originally constructed in 1910, the Hawthorne Bridge is the oldest operating vertical lift bridge in the United States. The Hawthorne Bridge is one of Portland’s busiest bridges, safely carrying approximately 30,000 cars and trucks, 800 TriMet buses, 8000 bicycles and untold pedestrians daily across the Willamette River. Vertical clearance for river traffic is lower than the other bridges, requiring as many as 200 openings per month. The main span can be raised 33m. to allow vessels to pass underneath.
Like other vertical lift bridges, the Hawthorne Bridge uses a system of counterweights and cables to move the lift span straight up and down. The operating system is mostly original, but the electrical power and control systems—which were installed in 1975—were upgraded in 1999. Hawthorne’s counterweights each weigh 450 tons and are supported by the bridge’s two towers, which rise 50m. above the bridge deck. Major structural modifications on the truss spans have included:
The Hawthorne’s main river span is made up of six spans for a total length of 420m. The three spans east of the lift span section are each 64m. long; the lift span is about 145m. long; the tower spans (which flank the lift span) are each 75m. long. The towers rise 50m. above the bridge deck and support the bridge’s two counterweights, which each weigh 450 tons. (www.multco.us/bridges)

Hallo Rob,
Ah, een mooie close-up van de hefbrug met het contragewicht dat dankzij zijn rode kleur duidelijk zichtbaar is ten opzichte van de groene constructie. Je kunt nog helemaal tot het topje klimmen ook.

Hello Rob,
Carefully I looked at the WS's to get the perception of the structure seen on the main photo.
Excellent take on all 3 photos.
Good afternoon,

Hello Rob,
It would not be entirely easy for everyone to see what this is, without any further information. The workshops explain it well. What I see here is a quite exciting construction with a lot of black details creating interesting patterns with many diagonals, and in the middle of it all a huge, striking red element. It's graphically wonderful, and almost like a work of art on its own.
I would have imagined Portland to be worth a visit not just for bridges and buildings, but for the street-life in what seems to be one of the most progressive cities in the USA when it comes to politics and environmental issues.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Rob,
Reasonably good sharpness and a superb warm cold color contrast between the rusty red slab of the vertical bridge and the blue sky. Tfs!

Hello Rob,
A well framed composition that extracts the maximum graphism offered by this element of the bridge. I like the warm/cool tonal contrasts and the strong geometric lines.

Bonjour Rob,
Il y a beaucoup de ponts en Amérique avec ce genre de contre poids de ciment pour rendre le pont levis un peu plus fonctionnel. Ici, le rouge est très évident dans tout ce vert.
Amicalement

Hi Rob
glad you added the WS photos, without them I don't think i'd be able to put it all together. you know what this reminds me of? the inner makings of the Steam Clock in Gastown Vancouver.
I have to say, after reading your note this photo makes complete sense, and its cool to see the weights like this.
never seen this bridge before. awesome
cheers

Hi Rob,
The tight frame is putting the bridge in evidence. The point of view is showing the details of the mechanism of the Hawthorne Bridge. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Rob, A few years ago I was an editor of the book about the movable bridge constructions and since then I am fascinated with them and always look with the great interest. great view of this counterweight in striking red colour. But I prefer the Workshop picture where I can see the whole view. Fantastic construction. It must be great experience to go through it or to see it opening. For many bridges it is rather rare event, usually they are closed all the tome.
Kind regrad s Malgo
