Photographer's Note

Early in the afternoon, the zoo's big cats and polar bears decided to escape the summer heat by taking a nap. The only brown bear in the zoo decided that it would go for a swim.

As crowds gathered around his pen, he began to put on a show. He would drive under the water to pick up objects or cool off by taking a quick dip.

In this photograph, the bear has just come up from the bottom of his pool with a chew toy and is shaking the water out of his fur.

Brown bears are omnivores that range from Alaska to Mexico. Due to habitat destruction, they are far less common than they used to be.
