Photographer's Note

Here she was, like a ballerina surfing through concrete and metal jungle, right in the middle of Times Square.

Her pink dress seems to make her more vulnerable, maybe because it reminds the colour of the flesh. I like the way she is "enclosed" by the taxis, describing an arc around her.

Ici les taxi, par la compression due à la longue focale, sont la part belle de l'image. On ne peut ignorer dans quelle ville cette photo a été prise...
Et puis, on de couvre la demoiselle en rose. Sa posture rehausse la présence de son fessier qui jaillit de la photo.

the only things missing are some big curlers (don't know if that's correct in english but more then likely you know what i mean) in her hair (... the ones that women used to sleep with at night ... like she forgot to take them of when she left home in a hurry).

anyhow, brave lady (aren't we all? no matter what we wear) in pink you've captured here, doesn't seem to care much about the agressive yellow jungle around

... oh well, reality is where your perception is anyway.

Andre- you've captured a very interesting scene here. I may have seen this street a hundred times, of course in movies ;-) but never looked at it this way.

And fantastic note to support ur shot. I can imagine her moving in zigzag motion, making her way thru the taxis.

J'aime beaucoup parce que c'est une photo surprise....
A la miniature, je pensais que c'était un type totalement nu... Ben quoi? j'ai le droit de voir tout ce que je veux aujourd'hui!!
Et puis à l'ouverture, j'ai vu ma méprise mais j'ai cru qu'elle était toujours nue... ah ça quand j'ai une idée dans la tête!... avec non pas un casque mais une série de giboudis... Bon la nuit à été difficile j'avoue...
Mais j'aime beaucoup l'idée qu'elle soit la seule à être nette dans tout ce capharnaüm jaune.
Et toi? tu étais où alors? sur le trottoir ou à fond les manettes sur ton vélo pour la rattraper?

Bonjour André,

Voila une photo originale par la facon de montrer cette cycliste entourée de taxi jaune. Ca m amuse d autant plus que je vais au boulot tout les jours en velo mais que j hesiterais pas mal a en faire aux USA car il n y a aucune consideration pour les usagers qui ne sont pas en voiture.
J aime beaucoup le rendu en profondeur avec une faible profondeur de champs.
Petit plus dans la lecture de l image, les roues avant du taxi qui suggerent le mouvement d evitement.
Juste par curiosité, tu etais a main levée avec le 300/2.8 ou tu avais deballé le trepied sur le trottoir?

Hey Giant ;-)

You should come here to my place if you want to see madness how some drive on their bike, you would amazed. It's not something that is related to NY and therefor interesting to see in this one. More interesting that it is a lady in pink, that makes it even more interesting. Who is she, were is she going, questions that never will be answerd, but interesting to see between all those yellow cabs.
Good observation and timing here....next time we shoot together in NYC ;-)

Trés bon coup d'oeil comme de réflexe. Ici le contraste entre ces deux modes de transports est bien rendu avec cette idée de vélo dans la jungle urbaine. Bien fait.

Someone is sure to say, which is dangerous? A cyclist who is defenseless excluding head, or a prestigious photographer who brandishes a bazooka in the middle of Times Square.
Joking aside, your ability to be able to capture a ballerina enclosed by a lot of yellow cabs at perfect timing is superb.

Great shot, most surprising situation, Andre. And you got her so well, surrounded by 'your' yellow 'friends' everywhere. And she seems unstoppable. She's obviously provoking those urban methalic things that own the city, dancing right in front of this one. Beautiful bokeh for the background.

Hi Andre, great image, the girl, with some grace, swinging into a gap in the angular mechanical looking cars. The brake lights on the taxi add to the idea of her interupting the stream of taxis. timing was fabulous, as is sharpness and DOF. nice work. cheers, Steve

Very dynamic. Controversy of being ladylike and doing cycle slalom in the urban jungle makes this special. Those cabs indeed surround her nicely. And those unfocused city lights, they really are your trademark.

Vraiment une trés belle composition,
cadrage n'incluant pas le taxi en entier, sujet décentré à gauche sur fond de jungle urbaine et profondeur de champ judicieuse, tout pour bien nous montrer comment cyclistes et piétons sont à la merci des 'yellows cabs' et autres.

Great shot, using the contrast between the lone cyclist and the sea of taxi cabs. It works so much better because all of the cars are the same (taxis) rather than different. Good use of the shallow depth of field too, which isolates and emphasizes the main subject. Well done!

Super composition j'aime beaucoup. Effectivement quelle jungle ! Tous ces taxis c'est impressionnant. Il faut être sacrément motivée pour affronter ce bazar et cette pollution à vélo en petite robe et sandalette... et de si petites roues ! Et rien que pour ça, cette dame méritait un post ! La moitié de taxi et le vélo qui gite ajoutent au côté jungle. Vraiment bien...

trop marrant cette photo!On se demande ce que fait cette femme à vélo au milieu de ces innombrables taxis jaunes!Sa position penchée laisse suposer qu'elle est en pleine vitesse,elle a bien fait de mettre un casque,même si ça ne va pas avec sa petite robe rose!C'est vrai qu'aux Etats-Unis,elles ne s'embêtent pas avec ce genre de chose,qu'elles mettent des tennis pour marcher même en tailleur élégant!J'aime bien la faible profondeur de champs mettant les taxis flous,ce qui permet de se concentrer sur la cycliste,et j'aime bien les couleurs avec tous ces petits points lumineux parsemés dans la jungle jaune!Très bien vu!

Salut, André. La PDC plutôt courte aide à bien se concentrer sue le sujet, la version féminine de la Panthère Rose. Ton cadrage nous donne effectivement l'impression qu'elle est tout à fait perdue dans cet univers de taxis. C'est très coloré et bien contrasté.

Like a diamond in the rough, she is the elegance in the harsh city! Cool use of depth of field and she is framed perfectly amongst the yellow taxis, almost as if they have made a special pathway for her to go through. Very well seen!

to make a great shot you have to see the potential quite before you get the camera up, adjust the settings, aim and push the trigger. I wonder how you saw this scene of the lady in her pink dress driving through the cluster of yellow cabs coming up. The detail of the monotone yellow with the red backlights contrasting with the lady on the bike is simply fantastic, but what tips the scene off is the leaning aspect. That provides a huge element of action.
Hey, I just noticed that you're using a 1Ds Mark III. Since when? With a 300mm I wonder if you had any difficulties in NYC. That must have looked like a bazooka and less a camera ;-)

En tout cas, tu peux présenter cette photo à l'institut de sécurité routière pour témoigner de la fragilité des cyclistes au milieu de la jungle des rues... LOL

Many questions about this pink girl riding through Manhattan but the most interesting one will be why she is dressed in that style and riding such a bike, and not taking a cab?

Sometimes I think street photography is just a photo that raises a host of questions or more thoughts to make it worth more value, no?

Let me say it this way - without the pink girl riding the bike, this shot will lose its interest tremendously. tfs

Encore un coup de massue du terrible objo 300/2.8, armé par le dédé au bras néanderthalien.
très bien vu l'isolation de la cycliste en tutu. mais 'tain, l'objo, y déchire grave sa race (expression favorite du neuf-trois, banlieue parisienne, pour les non français) quand même, on dirait un hologramme tellement c'est superbement détaillé et contrasté.
Le bokeh devient psychédélique avec des petites pastilles rouges et vertes qui se mettent à voleter sur les murs, comme juste après la 3ème bouteille de pinard ou la petite étoile noire sur le buvard.
