Photographer's Note

I'm taking a break from my Hawaii series.
Much of Australia is suffering from a nasty, long drought and I've been out the last few days looking at some of the results.
My first photo was taken from a mountain overlooking where I live (in the town in the foreground). The drought has resulted in extremely dry conditions. Both New South Wales and Queensland having been under siege from extensive and disastrous bush (wild) fires.
What you can see here is a massive bank of smoke from an out of control fire in the huge wilderness area that makes up the top half of the photo. The fire has been burning for at least 2 weeks. It is now breaking out towards small towns just outside Sydney. The smoke is dumping ash over much of Sydney.
At the moment we don't have much smoke where I live (we did for a couple of weeks) because the winds are from the west.

Best in the large view.
