Photographer’s Note
I am mentally getting ready for our next trip to Latin America, which means reviewing images from the last trip. here's one of them - mid-morning view on Salar de Atacama in the middle of Atacama desert.
Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile (100km long and 80km wide), and second in the world, after Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. the salt flat contains 27% of the world's lithium reserves, but at the same time some of its area is part of Los Flamencos National Reserve.
about the photo: already in the morning the haze is very strong, but I liked the effect of only the snow-capped mountaintops visible in the distance, especially against the rough foreground of dry salt. throw in some flamingos, and you have a typical scene from that part of Chile.

Hi Kristine,
superb shot...in the FG with the birds and the warm colors and in the BG with those partially hidden mountains. Beautiful.

A fantastic shot. The mountains are coming out like ghosts from the mist.
The sharp foreground is perfect.

Hello Avene,
As you said in your note, a big part of the interest of this photo is the contrast between the sharp and lighted foreground with the vanishing mountains in background.
The flamingos are just the needed touch of life, not so easy to find in the salar.
I wish you a nice end of year,
Yves.

Hi Kristine,
so you are going to Latin America again? I wish you a great trip! Here you present an oustanding photography. I'd love to have that in my gallery :) What I like here is the light. It makes me believe I am there. The effect of the heavy fog on the background mountains brings an attractive and interesting atmosphere to the scene...and those flamingos are a special bonus for sure!

Carlos

Hi, Kristine -
Interesting shot making the best of poor visibility. The mountaintop does seem to be detached from the planet.
Back to Latin America, hmmm? Where to this time?

Hello Kristine,
With the peaks of the Andes seemingly floating above the mist, provide a dramatic backdrop to the flamingo. And these creatures with the spindly legs are a natural oddity, so exotic to my world.
In a month we'll be in South America also, arriving in Rio on Jan. 25.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
Bulent

Hello Kristine
Firstly, your a photographer who I have enjoyed viewing over 2009, your work speaks volumes so well done and KEEP it up!!! I don't think I have ever seen viewing a mountain range like this, im sure NZ ones are like this, you can only see the best part at the top.
I love the sharpness in the FG, and the reflections are mighty fine.
All the best for 2010, hope the cold snap isn't too bad your way in USA.
Regards
Jim

Hi Kristine
The view is outstanding, the top of the mountain popping up behind the fence of clouds is stylish and gives a mystic touch to the shot. The soil visible in the foreground attests that this is reality, and a strong one... but I like a more ethereal view; so I would see this ridge disappear without any regrets. My attempt in WS. I do not know if it works for you? Congratulations!
Regards
Marine
Enjoy your trip!!! I am sure you will bring back some photographic gems.

Hi Kristine, what a subtle and effective piece of photography! It seems simple yet is so far from that with the layers of colour and texture. The icing on the cake is the "hint" of those mountains. I hope you;re not freezing to death in NY and wish you a safe journey to Latin America and a very Merry Christmas and happy 2010. It was lovely "meeting" you on TE this year and I value our friendship and always look forward to your photos. Hugs, Lisa

Hello Kristine!
I visited Chile back in 2005, but only its Capital City (Santiago), nearby cities by the Pacific (Valparaiso and Viña del Mar) and then went 1,000km down south to visit some islands, lakes, volcanoes and ski areas! It's totally different than its north, pretty similar to some areas in Bolivia and Peru!
Your pictures from there are always such a great surprise... always wonderful!
This one has a splendorous composition, a very well chosen pov, excellent sharpness, exposure and colors!
TFS - congratulations!
A very Merry Christmas to you, your family and friends!

Hi Kristine,
I always dream that roses could bloom in the moon...and here when I watch this image, it feels the same. A mountain just bloomed into your frame, brushing the precious moments dreamt !! Amazing !!

Hello Kristine! Almost Christmas Eve, everybody is running from A to B, visiting families and friends and I am not far away either to be spoilt ... my father cooks ... So I hold still for a moment enjoying this imense view before I sit in the car and drive off. Beautiful the distant mountains, we can just see some but this is the key in this picture. Happy days, Merry Christmas, Kristine, a lot of eating probably but we can always go on a diet after ;))) Barbara.

Hi Kristine,
I love this, Looking at this image bring back some of the similar experiene I encounter in Chile, while the bottem part of the landscape is covered in thick clouds and suddenly we saw some really bright white cloud up at the top, and after a closer look, we didscovered it was the top of tha snow mountain. I was amaze just how high it was. Which looks the same here. What you got going on here also are the very beautiful foreground of the red geological formation and the lovely flamingoes and their beautiful reflection on the peaceful and calm lagoon. Even in the haze, we can still see some faint suggestion of the distant landscape below the snow peak. Great job, my complements.
Where to next in South America?

Hello Kristine
Excited to see this picture as we just came back seeing some flamingoes, for the first time in our lives :-)Its interesting to see almost all them standing upright without them feeding with their beaks in the water. I love the hint of the mountain in the BG, which looks quite surreal
I wish you, Kristaps and your family the very best for the New Year!

Hi Kristine,
What a beauty, what a purity!
I like this extraordinary appearance... we are between two wonderful worlds where the blue and the pink juxtapose with a big sweetness. We forget that nevertheless, we are in an austere and wild desert.
Definitively fascinating!
Brava!

This is so good, very exotic with this combination of flamingoes and a snow-topped mountain, but of course the best is this fog which results in an impression that the mountain top is hanging in the air...
Cheers
