Nandou
Le nandou appartient à l'ordre des Struthioniformes qui comprend également l'autruche (Afrique), l'émeu (Australie), le kiwi (Nouvelle-Zélande), le casoar (Australie et Nouvelle-Guinée) et le moa, maintenant disparu. La tête et le cou du nandou sont complètement couverts par son plumage dont la couleur varie du gris pâle au brun. Le nandou n´a pas de queue, mais des longues plumes partent de sa partie postérieure. Bien qu´il soit un oiseau, le nandou ne peut pas voler parce qu´il ne possède que des petites ailes qui ne sont pas adaptées au vol. Cependant il possède de longues pattes pour se déplacer rapidement. Le nandou atteint 1.5m de hauteur et pèse environ 25kg. Il vit à peu près 18 ans. Le nandou s’alimente principalement de plantes, de racines, de grillons et de certains reptiles de petite
taille. Comme les autruches, les nandous sont polygames, ils s’accouplent avec plusieurs femelles (pas plus de dix !). Ce sont les males qui couvent environ 20 à 30 oeufs qui éclosent au bout de quarante jours. Il existent 4 variétés de nandu :

• Rhea americana Nandou d’Amérique
• Rhea pennata pennata Nandou de Darwin
• Rhea pennata tarapacensis Nandou Andin

Cette phoyo n'est pas très piquée car elle a été tirée en voiture à travers la fenêtre avec le zoom au max sans trépied. Elle a été recoupée donnant l'effet d'un objectif de 1300 mm (24x36).

Rhea
The rhea belongs to the order of Struthioniforms which also includes the ostrich (Africa), the emeu (Australia), the kiwi (New Zealand), the casoar (Australia and New Guinea) and the moa, now disappeared. The head and the neck of the nandou are completely covered by its plumage whose color varies from pale gray to the brown. The nandou does not have a tail, but long feathers start from its posterior part. Although it is a bird, the nandou cannot fly because it has only small wings which are not adapted to the flight. However it has long legs to move quickly. The nandou reached 1.5m height and weighs approximately 25kg. It live about 18 years. The nandou feeds mainly from plants, roots, crickets and certain reptiles of
small size. Like the ostriches, the nandous are polygamous, they are coupled with several females (not more than ten!). In fact the males brood approximately 20 to 30 eggs which hatch at the end of forty days. There exist 4 varieties of nandu:

• Rhea americana Greater Rhea
• Rhea pennata pennata Darwin Rhea
• Rhea pennata tarapacensis Andean Rhea
