Photographer's Note

In Quito I stayed with a friend of a friend. I arrived literally in the middle of a huge halloween party, but managed to get some sleep so I could explore the mountains on my first full day in Ecuador. But before heading for Pichincha, the volcano overlooking Quito, I went to the roof of the building where I was staying. I saw a beautiful city in all directions, and in this one I think you can spot perhaps the most famous church to the left. The hills in the background are the hills of Pichincha. Quito is the second largest city in Ecuador after Guayaquil and at 2850 masl. it's also the second highest capital city of any sovereign states in the world, after La Paz, Bolivia.

Although Quito is only the second largest city in the country, it's definitely not a small city. The city is streched out from north to south in a valley. Taxi and bus fares are the cheapest I have ever experienced. It's a different philosophy, but it seems to be working very well. Cheap fares make people leave the cars at home. Quito is located about 25 km south of equator (Mitad del Mundo) and there are frequent buses up to the monument at equator from Carcelen Bus Terminal in the northern part of the city.
